Whether you live in a city apartment or country house, knowing how to properly measure for a new piece of furniture is key to a smooth delivery and installation process. In our expert guide, we will cover useful tips for measuring your home effectively, as well as how best to prepare for a hassle-free delivery.
Confirm product dimensions
Once you have decided on your perfect Coco Republic piece, check its width, depth and height on our website. It is essential to ensure that the depth of the furniture is smaller than the narrowest point of any doorway, stairway, hallway or lift it will need to pass through. If the depth is too large, then consider whether the height or width might allow it to fit instead (sometimes a sofa’s height is less than its depth, for example).

MAP OUT YOUR SPACE
Now that you know the dimensions of your new piece of furniture, decide where you want it to live. Use masking tape to map out its dimensions on the floor and walls. If it is an extendable piece, like a sofa bed or extension table, make sure to factor in its full, extended size too. Functionality is key, so check for any obstructions. Your furniture should not restrict access to essential features of the room, like electrical outlets, light switches or vents.

Measure the access route
Before your new furniture arrives, identify the best pathway from outside to its intended position in your home. Measure all key points along the way – doorways, hallways, staircases and lifts – that the piece will need to pass through. Then, compare these measurements to the dimensions of your furniture to ensure there is adequate room for it to reach its destination.

Doorways
- Measure the width, height and diagonal of all doorways along the delivery path. Compare these to your furniture’s dimensions to determine whether it can fit straight through or will need to be angled.
- Check how wide each door can open. If the fit is tight, consider removing the doors from their hinges – even a couple of extra inches can help make the delivery process much easier.
- Measure the distance between each doorway and the opposite wall to ensure there is enough space to navigate corners.

HALLWAYS
- Measure the height and width of every hallway your item will pass through, paying attention to any narrow points and corners.
- Consider low-hanging ceiling fixtures or architectural features that may obstruct access.
- Measure the length of the hallway to ensure there is enough space to manoeuvre larger items horizontally, like tall bookcases, sofas or beds.
- Please note: the slats for our beds are delivered as a single, intact piece, which can sometimes present challenges in tight hallways, staircases or around corners.

stairways
- Measure the width of stairways at multiple points, taking into account any handrails, light fixtures or other obstructions.
- Measure the ceiling height from both the top and bottom steps to ensure there is enough clearance when carrying larger items.
- Ensure there is adequate space to manoeuvre furniture on and around landings by measuring their width and depth.
- Pay close attention to tight corners or angled ceilings that could make navigating more difficult.

lifts
- If your building has a lift, check how wide the doors can open and measure both the maximum width and height.
- Then, measure the internal width, depth and height of the lift – this is important as your furniture may need to fit either upright or on its side.
- You may also need to tilt your furniture into an angled position, so make sure to measure the diagonal distance from one corner of the lift to the opposite corner.

PREPARING FOR DELIVERY
To ensure a smooth delivery day, clear a direct, unobstructed path to your furniture’s final destination. Consider removing any nearby furniture or fragile objects from the delivery path to avoid accidents, and protect your floors with a suitable covering to prevent scratches or marks.
Safety is essential, so please ensure that access to your property is safe and unobstructed. It is the recipient’s responsibility to confirm that the furniture will fit through all access points and into the intended space. If delivery is unsuccessful due to access issues, the customer may be liable for additional charges.
